199The majestic Dudhsagar Waterfalls are situated on the luscious and evergreen trees of the Western Ghats in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National-Park in Sanguem Taluka. The Mandovi River finds its way through the Western Ghats and gushes down from a height of 1017 ft. from the steep side of the mountains and this is a breathtaking view for the tourists.
Dudhsagar is referred to as “sea of milk” owing to its milk-like colour. Gushing water from an almost 300m height is indeed a mesmerizing feel. It looks exactly like milk being poured from the top of mountain ranges.
Local story behind the falls
Once a princess, the daughter of the king of Ghats was taking a bath in the lake near her father’s castle. The princess and her maidens sat by the side of the lake after taking the bath and drank milk from a jug, made of gold with precious diamonds being embedded.
One day, while a charming prince was riding through the woods, he heard the laughter which made him curious as to where the sound was coming from. To his surprise, when he saw the scarcely dressed princess, her maidens in order to protect the honor of the princess poured the milk from the jug. A curtain of milk was formed to protect the princess.
The curtain that protected the modesty of the princess is known as the “Dudhsagar Falls”.
